In the past, humans had to perform every little task manually, but now, piles of work can be completed in a matter of seconds using AI. This shift has freed humans to focus on more creative and strategic endeavours. It’s vast ranging applications, from healthcare, AI assists in diagnosing diseases with precision, to finance, it aids in developing vast strategies and detecting fraud. AI has revolutionised every sector of work, making processes more efficient and effective.
So, with the vast growth of AI, one of the fields it has profoundly affected is the hiring process. Hiring is a critical job where a person must correctly review the details of each applicant and select the right candidate for the role, as no company wants to risk hiring someone undeserving while overlooking a candidate who could truly make a difference. Talent acquisition in HR is an incredibly important and often hectic task. Selecting the perfect person is not as easy as flipping a coin, it requires careful analysis, intuition, and a deep understanding of the company's needs and culture.
AI-powered recruitment tools have transformed this process by automating initial screening and analysing candidate data with precision helping to predict which candidate is best for the company. Tools such as HireVue and Pymetrics assist in evaluating candidate’s responses in a manner similar to human evaluation, but with greater accuracy. For example, HireVue uses video interviewing combined with AI to check candidate’s responses, confidence, and suitability for the role. Pymetrics employs neuroscience-based games to evaluate a candidate's emotional traits and cognitive functioning, matching them with the job profile. LinkedIn Talent Insights provides real-time data and AI-driven analytics to help recruiters identify talent and simplify the hiring process. The process of how AI selects resumes typically involves several key steps, utilising various AI technologies and algorithms. AI tools use Natural Language Processing (NLP) to extract text from resumes and organise it into sections like name, contact info, education, work experience, and skills then, it analyses job descriptions and identifies key skills to scan resumes for matching keywords. It uses Advanced NLP techniques help assess soft skills and achievements, then it gives a score to every resume on how well it matches the job profile. Using such AI based platforms is very common today, almost every company is using them to minimise the risk of hiring the wrong candidate. These tools reduce the time and effort required for HR professionals to review the numerous applications they receive; they can easily separate out the candidates who are best suited for the role. This allows HR professionals to focus more on the strategic aspects of talent management, giving assurance in their hearts that the right candidates are chosen effectively and efficiently.
Before this era of Ai, this process was very time consuming, involving sifting through numerous resumes, interviewing for countless hours, and making judgments that often resulted in mixed outcomes. For example, at a company like Google, a single job opening attracts over 7,000 applications. Manually reviewing 7,000 resumes and selecting a few candidates is an incredibly time and energy taking task and also gives errors due to human exhaustion. Moreover, interviewing so many candidates and making judgments that may not always be accurate adds to the challenge. Although traditional recruitment methods are still in use in some companies, they have largely been replaced by AI-driven solutions to enhance accuracy, to reduce human exhaustion, and make data-driven decisions. This shift marks the rise of AI in the recruitment process. These tools are designed to quickly analyse vast amounts of data and identify patterns that align with the ideal job profile, making the recruitment process faster and less exhausting for human recruiters.
For instance, let's take a company named Y, a fast-growing startup in the e-commerce space. As it expands rapidly, it requires a significant number of new employees across various departments. The use of AI-powered tools has allowed the company to reduce time by around 40%and completes the process within a few months, creating a stronger and more productive workforce by matching candidates' skills and personalities with the company's needs. The system can process thousands of resumes with just a few clicks. It tells candidates who are likely to prove to be beneficial for the company, considering their qualifications, cultural fit, and career strategy. AI doesn't just evaluate the skills listed on a resume, it also looks at the language used to check soft skills and predict future performance. These tools provide an objective assessment of candidates, eliminating unconscious human bias that might otherwise occur.
You might have noticed that after submitting your job application, you receive an automated message within seconds saying, “Thank you for applying to our company. We will reach out to you soon.” Then, a few weeks later, you get a scheduled date for your interview. How are such abundant tasks carried out? These are done using AI.
Now, let's put ourselves in the shoes of an HR professional who used to spend hours going through countless resume piles manually. The tedious process, coupled with the necessity of making subjective decisions, often led to losing out on capable candidates due to human error or irritation. “AI-powered recruitment tools have, in many ways, transformed the recruiting process. While AI provides many upsides, one should try balancing technology with human interaction. The amount of creativity and personal empathy humans can bring to the process is something AI lacks. Candidates still appreciate a personal touch and connection that comes with human interaction. AI should enhance but not replace the human element in recruitment. Humans may be more prone to errors and less efficient in some tasks, but their creativity, intelligence, and ability to understand a range of emotions cannot be replaced. Some sentences in resumes written by freshers might not be easily understood by AI, but humans can relate to and understand them. AI should handle repetitive tasks, allowing humans to focus on building relationships and learning from each candidate. The recruitment process is not just about hiring new employees but also about understanding and appreciating different personalities.
By reviewing multiple resumes and interacting with diverse candidates, we gain knowledge of various ways people work and think. This process should be a collaboration between AI and humans, combining the efficiency and precision of AI with the empathy and creativity of human recruiters.
